The first major change is that CPT codes 69715 & 69718 have been deleted. These codes had incorporated mastoidectomy procedures with the osseointegrated implants procedures. Now, a new CPT note directs coders to assign additional codes from 69501-69676 in addition to these osseointegrated implant procedures when mastoidectomy procedures are also performed.
Next, references to the temporal bone were removed and the term replaced with the word “skull”. Also removed were the references to a cochlear stimulator. If the phrase, without mastoidectomy had previously been part of the code definition, it was also removed.
Codes now are broken down into the implant attachment methodology, namely percutaneous or with magnets. This is true for the insertion, revision/replacement, or removal as noted below.
69714 Implantation, osseointegrated implant, skull; with percutaneous attachment to external
69716 with magnetic transcutaneous attachment to external speech processor
69717 Revision or replacement (including removal of existing device), osseointegrated implant,
69719 with magnetic transcutaneous attachment to external speech processor
69726 Removal, osseointegrated implant, skull; with percutaneous attachment to external speech
69727 with magnetic transcutaneous attachment to external speech processor
Now, light has been shed on CPT coding for osseointegrated implants.
