Reimagining OHIMA Through Strategic Planning

by Jill Z. Choi, MBA, RHIA, CHPC

On September 15, 2022, I got to experience something unique.  I, along with all the other members of the OHIMA Board got to participate in a strategic planning session for OHIMA, facilitated by Tom Balzer.

Before the meeting, we were given pre-work.  We were to answer questions like:

  • What does OHIMA do well and what could we do better?
  • What does AHIMA do well and what do they not do so well?
  • What is one thing OHIMA can be the best in the world at?
  • What do you believe best describes OHIMA’s role?
  • What should OHIMA start, stop, and continue doing?
  • What role does OHIMA play in education?
  • List items you feel OHIMA should be doing on advocacy.
  • What is OHIMA’s role in engagement?
  • What is the one thing that if OHIMA accomplished you would sit back and say “our work here is done”?

First, we broke down our mission statement. Thomas asked us what “Empowering people to impact health in Ohio” means to us as a practical matter.  Additionally, he asked what “commit to excellence in the management of health information for the benefit of patients and providers” meant.

Then we went through all of the above questions and brainstormed answers to each of the questions.

What happens next?  All the material that was generated in this strategic planning session will be compiled into tangible focus areas and strategic initiatives – establishing a strategic direction for the future of the association. The OHIMA Central Office – in partnership with the OHIMA Board of Directors – will implement these initiatives. Watch for more information on this strategic plan in the near future!
