Prescription Perils

Test your ICD-10-CM coding skills with this Klutz family experience.

January saw each of the Klutz children experiencing an illness and some type of reaction to medication that was prescribed for their condition.  See if you can determine the appropriate ICD-10-CM coding for each child’s situation.

First, Peter was found to be wheezing.  After a trip to the pediatrician, he was diagnosed with asthma and prescribed Symbicort.  After the first dose, he developed angioedema of the tongue, and an ER visit was needed.  There the physician verified the angioedema from the medication and prescribed a new medication to treat Peter’s mild persistent asthma exacerbation.

Next in line was Janine who came down with the flu.  Luckily, she was the only Klutz family member to get it this year, which may in part be due to the fact that she was prescribed Tamiflu by the family doctor.  Unfortunately, Janine did develop rather severe diarrhea from taking the medication.

Egon followed with a bad bout of bronchitis.  He was prescribed Amoxil by the physician at Urgent Care but had to discontinue it after he developed pruritus and a urticaric rash.

Little Dana developed croup for which the pediatrician prescribed Prednisone.  After the medication, she had nausea and vomiting, which continued after several more doses but eventually subsided.

Finally, Raymond had the roughest time of all the children as he had viral gastroenteritis.  The doctor recommended he be given Zofran for the associated nausea and vomiting of the adenoviral disease.  Additionally, Raymond took the over-the-counter Ibuprofen his mom gave him and very quickly developed respiratory distress.  He went to the ER where they monitored his respiratory status and gave him fluids.
